For several years, my primary work in newspapers was as a designer. Using Adobe InDesign and QuarkXPress, I laid out the Austin American-Statesman’s personal finance, technology, homes, lifestyle, food and news sections and the XL entertainment tabloid. And in the days before desktop publishing software replaced paper, wax and X-acto knives, I designed the Bryan-College Station Eagle’s food and lifestyle sections.
Because of my design experience, I see the importance of all aspects of a package in telling a story, something I also keep in mind as a writer and editor. I have planned the visual presentation of stories and sections, assigned graphics, coordinated photo shoots, and worked on a creative team with writers, editors, artists and photographers. I was also the first designer chosen for a pilot project to bring more long-range planning to the Statesman’s weekend business sections.
